Class description:

The goal of this course is to provide students an opportunity to explore a variety of mixed media methods using a wide range of techniques. Each class will be a stand alone project and a chance to delve into a medium that is perhaps new or unexplored. Students will be encouraged to take a medium farther into personal projects and further exploration. You will leave this class with a new set of tools for working with wet and dry materials, printmaking, painting, collage, writing, and others.

6 sessions

  1. Crayons and pastels and watercolor
  2. Further watercolor explorations
  3. Pens and ink
  4. Stamp making and printmaking with household items
  5. Pencils and paint
  6. All together now / building layers

I’ve compiled a list of course materials for this class. These are all SUGGESTIONS and not required supplies (see note below).  To visit this list, please go to https://www.dickblick.com/lists/blicku/0CDFBXLBV5O0K

A note about supplies: Please do not feel like you need to purchase everything on the supply list before class starts. When I teach classes online, a large part of the class is demonstrations and discussions of materials. You will not miss any important content if you do not have the exact same art supply in hand when I am giving a demonstration. I will encourage you to use supplies you already have and class demonstrations will be a chance for you to see these supplies in action. You can pick and choose what you would like to invest in for art supplies. This supply list is a great starting place but again, please don’t worry if you don’t want to buy all these things right away or can’t find something. Or if you want a different color set than what I have on the list, that’s great! These supplies are all ones I use frequently and love. The paper is a LARGE amount of paper but so far no one has been sad to have a jumbo stack of mixed media weight paper at hand. But feel free to get a different or small amount of mixed media weight paper. One buy one or two of the supplies instead of the whole sets – that’s a great idea too!

Instructions for accessing the class via Zoom will be provided to registrants prior to the first class meeting.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

California artist Erin McCluskey Wheeler is known for her bright colored collage artwork made up of found and painted papers. Erin combines vintage papers and her own painted paper to create densely layered paintings full of light, space, and bold colors. With both an abstract and graphic style, Erin’s works are sometimes symbolic or whimsical, and play with ideas of nostalgia and visual memories in a narrative context.

Erin has a BA in studio art, and a BA in art history (magna cum laude) from Beloit College, and an MFA from California College of the Arts. Her work is widely collected as both prints and originals. Erin is represented by Jen Tough Gallery and her paintings have been licensed and sold through West Elm, Minted, and Samsung. In 2019, Erin was the artist in residence for the El Cerrito Recylcing Center. Erin teaches collage and mixed media classes throughout California (and now online!) and is a much sought after instructor.
