Class Description:
This 6-week workshop will introduce Alla-Prima portrait painting (quick sketch) … as well as a more Traditional Approach … for a more complex subject. Each class will come with a Vimeo video of the class, so you can watch the class at your convenience, should you miss the “actual class”. This class will be offered live online… so you can paint along, ask questions, watch demos, and share your work if you choose during the class as well as send it in afterwards for a personal review. I will supply a photo reference for each portrait, so that we can work towards the same goals.
I will demonstrate and teach you a variety of techniques to assist you in acquiring a likeness. We will start by blocking in the structure of the face by noting proportions, angles and the midlines. We then do an underpainting to note the value patterns of the face… placement and composition. We will learn how to make flesh tones using a simplified palette. We finally apply color as it relates to the value and structure of the face. We will explore edges, brushwork and focal points in the composition.
Although we will be working in a direct Alla-Prima approach, we will take ample time in the beginning to prepare the drawing aspect of each piece to assure accuracy relative to the proportions, and feature placements.
The Alla-Prima piece will take 2 sessions to complete… while the more complex piece will take 4 sessions to complete! This class will serve beginning and intermediate students, as well as emerging professional artists alike! I’ll look forward to having you join this intriguing and exciting journey!

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Deirdre Shibano is an award-winning artist, and was named “California Artist of the Year 2018” by Tosca Magazine. She was originally trained at the Art Students League in New York, and she continues to seek knowledge and techniques to improve her work, as well as to share with her students. Ms. Shibano has been teaching art for over 20 years in various venues including: art centers, community colleges, private studios and public schools.
