Class Description:
Discover how fun and beautiful watercolor can be! We will unlock the secrets of watercolor with a sense of play and exploration. This class is open to absolute beginners, no drawing experience required.
Week 1 Learn about watercolor materials, practice mixing light and dark values, and paint a simple picture with glazing technique.
Week 2 Mix secondary colors and neutrals from red, yellow and blue. We will make a color wheel and mix colors to match objects.
Week 3 Try twelve fun watercolor techniques and apply them to a still life painting.
Materials:
Please bring the following supplies to class:
A 9” x 12” pad of Arches cold press paper, 140 lb. 100 cotton watercolor paper. (Paper quality matters more than any other material).
A tube each of red, yellow and blue watercolor paint. Van Gogh and Cotman are affordable and good quality. If possible, squeeze a dime sized amount of each color into your palette and let it dry overnight before class.
The best reds are Carmine and Quinacridone Rose.
Two versatile blues are Ultramarine and Prussian Blue. (These blues are different and I recommend you purchase both if you can afford it).
Transparent or Lemon Yellow
A watercolor palette with a lid
A round #8 or #10 brush plus a 1” flat watercolor brush. (Blick offers “RealValue” brush assortments at a great price).
