And let them grow into the part of the self that is smooth and shiny,

And my voice scrapes theirs; I touch the body

A secret streams down the river
A secret babbled loudly by the water in sparkling sunlight
in a language that everyone understands
A secret rapidly rushing to sea
Racing water rinses away the shame and guilt
Truth dissolves the stain of a secret in sparkling sunlight.

Lying on my back
feeling the cool, smooth wooden planks hard against my back
folded arms under my head
an exhale brings an audible sigh
I relax
Looking up at shapes
like crumpled paper
flying in the wind
I notice the shadows
across the ceiling, walls,
floor and my body
I turn on one side
head on hand, propped on elbow
trace the lines across the floor
the wood grain to the edges
how the hues change with silhouettes
of dark and light negative space
I close my eyes and recall
white pelicans circling high above the bay
smell the salt in the air
light breezes tickle my arms and legs
hair dances across my face and eyes
footsteps interrupt the vision
now I am in still darkness
the docent approaches
tells me it is time to leave

Bits of Belgian homestead-scatterings on Nebraska prairie:
Sod scars, horse hay-wagon hardware fragments
seeds carried across the sea hidden from Ellis Island.
Trees. Wait…trees?
None in my old black & whites.
My previously unknown, buttermilk complexioned cousin
found the missing pieces. I thought they were long ago swept into the compost
but no, they were hidden in the corners of collapsing barns, a lost shoe, comic strips glued to the walls. Her. Still. Rooted. Generations…
Midwest Isolation drove my great grandparents to the west.
Cousins stayed. Lack of bird song drove them mad until
their saplings reached into the clouds and plucked passing bird songs into the earth.
Put your ear to the ground.
Listen way back… can you hear them?
the millions of buffalo ghosts on this Choctaw land?

My little abode
Of sticks and straw
In the parlor of the dry desert land;
A room for me and my own.
Today it stands —
shellshattered,
With the blood of my babies
Splattered;
And a ghost
That's me.
