There is no other subject that commands more attention from artists than the human figure. It’s in our nature to examine our nature. As Bay Area artist Nathan Oliveira said, “I had the desire to paint the figure without painting the figure.”

About the Juror: California-based artist, Randall Sexton, is nationally known for the color and expressive brushwork in his oil paintings of “everyday” scenes. He is described as a “painters’ painter” by Jean Stern (Director of The Irvine Museum of Art). In his words, “As one of the premier contemporary painters of the California landscape, Randall paints still-lifes, figures, portraits, and figurative scenes with equal mastery…His work evokes deep feelings, whether it’s the solitude of a deserted street at night or the exultation of a beautiful landscape, each speaks softly to the viewer.” A few of Randall’s most notable series are populated scenes from the streets of Cuba, Marching Bands, Parades, and most recently Barbershop Interiors in the Bay Area.
He regards painting figuratively from life as a highly demanding challenge and yet the most beloved and rewarding collaborative experience. He says, “To me, the model is undeniably a piece of the creative puzzle. It is their unique ‘presence’ that informs the outcome.”
Sexton has taught Figure Drawing, Painting, and Portrait classes since 1994. Students at The Academy of Art University, Pixar Animation Studios, and California College of Art have appreciated his guidance. He currently teaches private workshops nationally, internationally, and at his studio in the Benicia Arsenal.
