Class Description: Join Toru Sugita for this one-day workshop to introduce Reduction Color Woodcut prints. Unlike Mokuhanga, Japanese woodblock prints, which utilize multiple blocks for color printing, Reduction print is a single-block technique, achieved by the gradual cutting away of one wood block following the printing of each color stage. All colors are printed just out of one block which is re-carved for each color. Thus the original block is destroyed during the creation process and further copies beyond the first edition are impossible. This technique emerged in China and has been practiced by printmakers around the world
Bring: Idea sketches of 6″ x 8″ with three tonal values and preferred wood curving knives (I will provide some)
