Class Description: Join Erin in this workshop where you’ll use collage materials to create abstract landscapes. You are welcome to bring in a reference photo to help create your landscape, or you can work in free form and use the idea of a landscape as a jumping-off point for composition and color. You will look at ways that the materials, found imagery, and text in your work all work together to tell stories about a place and make for a nuanced and interesting portrait of the land.
Materials: Students should bring the following materials.
Paper options to work on: Watercolor paper, mixed media weight paper, sketchbook, or loose paper.
Collage materials: Art experiments, scrap paper, thin fabrics, postcards, maps, magazines, and color swatches. Bring a combination of things and try to have some solid color paper as well as patterned or printed papers. Think of colors that will be useful for interrupting your landscape (greens, blues, and browns, for instance)
Erin will have additional collage materials available for your use and feel free to bring extra materials to share.
Glue: Archival glue stick or glue you apply with a brush like Mod Podge, gel medium, Yes! Paste, Nori paste. The glue will be discussed more in class so please feel free to use what you have for the workshop and invest later in glue.
