Class description: This workshop, with artist and arts educator Angela White, will offer a fun and inspiring hands-on entry into the world of found-object, assemblage art. Participants will hear about some of the influential artists in the genre, learn the techniques of assemblage, and apply them to create their own works.
Theme: Ideas can come from words, poems, phrases, music, a specific object, a memory, place, concept, or an event with a strong meaning.
Inspiration: We will discuss the artwork of influential assemblage artists Betye Saar, Joseph Cornell, Louise Nevelson, and Joseph Bennett.
The instructor will provide some materials, substrates and tools. Students are encouraged to bring their own as well.
Materials: Perfect materials for assemblage include buttons, machine parts, wire, toys, game pieces, recycled plastic objects, jewelry, foam board, small boxes, lids, bottle caps, shells and other items from nature, beads, fabric pieces, pottery fragments, patterned paper, photocopied images, and more.
Substrate: Sturdy, hard material such as cardboard/chipboard, recycled cardboard boxes, decorative gift boxes, wooden boxes, and the insides of wooden art cradles.
Toolbox: X-Acto knife, utility knife, cutting mat, sharp scissors, serrated knife, brushes, metal ruler, hammer, small nails, pencils, white glue, hot-melt glue gun, glue sticks, gel medium, acrylic paints, and gesso.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Angela White is a fine artist inspired by physical, spiritual and emotional memories that create the visual depth and density of her work. Abstracts and seascapes compose the majority of her compositions. Natural and sensual materials such as oils and encaustic paint allow the blending of edges to create visual depth. Angela’s work is featured in both corporate and private collections. In the past 20 years, Angela has exhibited oil, encaustic and mixed media paintings extensively in juried shows across the DC metropolitan area as well as in New York and the West Coast. She holds two B.A. degrees and an M.A. degree from the University of Maryland.
