Class Description: In this 2-day workshop, we will explore the methods that are used to successfully draw a portrait. We will begin with techniques to note the proportions of the head, plus additional techniques to note the placement of the features. We will proceed to learn how to see the light and shadow patterns, which create forms… and only after all of the basic information is set … will we add the details of the features and the head!
The goal is to take the “guesswork” out of portrait drawing and give you a toolbox of skills that can be used to create portraits.
What we will cover:
• Proportions of the head
• Features: The placement and structure of the features
• Value: How to create form by understanding values (light and shadow).
• Angles: Techniques to determine the angles of the head and how that affects the individual features on the face as in foreshortening.
• Edges: How to turn the form by being aware not only of the light but also of the density of the edges.
Supply List: Art materials will need to be purchased prior to class.
