Class description: Students will learn the steps to prepare and carve a wood block for hand printing with water-based ink. Wood block printing is a type of relief printing process where the raised areas not carved away are inked. The paper is laid on the inked block and hand rubbed to transfer the ink to make the print. Several printing techniques will be used to create black and white, as well as color prints
Note: Sharp wood carving tools will be used. Supply list will be sent to students beforehand. Some supplies will be provided.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Get to know artist and teacher Stephen Daniel Schümm and you will be inspired by his dedication to excellence in his art-making while pursuing life-long interests in a variety of artistic mediums and styles. A glass artist since 1975, Stephen worked exclusively in leaded stained glass for many years in Benicia. Stephen started working in watercolor a number of years ago, following the tradition of stained glass artists who used watercolors to present their designs. He also works in collage and acrylic painting on canvas based on his photographs. Stephen has studied printmaking at Diablo Valley College with Toru Sugita. He is a member of Gallery 621 in Benicia and exhibits in various galleries and exhibitions in the San Francisco Bay Area.
