Jerry McLaughlin at the Rellik Tavern

Jerry McLaughlin at the Rellik Tavern

November 6, 2017 – January 8, 2018
Opening reception: Thursday, November 9, 6 – 9 pm

Diane Williams, Curator
The Rellik Tavern at 726 1st Street,  Benicia, CA

Quiet

These pieces reflect my desire to find quiet space. Finding that space in our modern world is difficult. Images, noise, people, electronics all vie for our attention, and as we are sadly discovering, this kind of stimulation can be both addictive and toxic. We also have our own inner noise: thoughts, voices, and dialogues that can be difficult to tame. Meditation and painting are my ways of learning to confront and control my noise and emotions, and they have both proven difficult and rewarding.

My work begins with text, marks, symbols, patterns—visual noise. As I build my paintings I gradually obscure them, quiet them, create a kind of visual meditation. For me they are like my own meditations, imperfect at silencing everything but powerful in the focus and calm they provide.
