$20 materials fee paid directly to the instructor

Location: Arts Benicia Annex, 991 Tyler St, #116, Benicia

Age minimum:  18
Level: All levels
Minimum 6 | Maximum 12

Class description: In this class students will learn how to make marbled paper.  The instructor will demonstrate a variety of methods of how to throw paint on the size, how to manipulate the paint with nails, rakes, and combs, how to lay down the paper on the size, and how to wash & dry the marbled paper. Each student will have their own marbling tray, set of acrylic paints, and their own nails, rakes, and combs. The instructor will alternate between demonstrating and helping students as they do it themselves. Each student can work at their own pace. Every student will make a minimum of 4 sheets of beautiful, marbled paper. If students have previous experience, this class will allow them to practice their skills. On the following afternoon, Sunday, January 15, an advanced class with limited enrollment will be offered, in which the instructor will offer further instruction and demonstrate advanced techniques.  Students who register for this class can also register for the advanced class.

Materials: All materials: the marbling trays, the size, the paints, the tools, paper pre-treated with mordant, a draining board, a drying rack, etc. will be provided.

SPECIAL NOTES: The instructor will offer a lecture on paper marbling using PowerPoint slides sometime during the day. Students can either listen and watch the lecture or continue marbling. The instructor will also bring his large collection of books on marbled paper, and samples of his own marbled papers for students to see.

Use the arrow in the box below to choose the appropriate member or non-member tuition rate.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Hampton Deck learned marbling from world-renowned marbler, Pamela Smith, working with her in her studio in Abiquiu, New Mexico. He has also taken lessons in Istanbul, Turkey. He has taught at Arts Benicia in past years. He constructed his own marbling studio in his garage here in Benicia, where he has created literally thousands of marbled papers of all colors and patterns. He has also studied bookbinding at the San Francisco Center for the Book. He combines these skills to create marbled paper-covered journals, datebooks, and sketchbooks, as well as other objects covered in marbled paper. He gives private lessons in his studio. He has a large collection of books about marbling. He is the Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Vallejo.
