“I thrive on making order out of chaos, and chaos out of order.
As a long-time resident of the East Bay of San Francisco I am surrounded by both the natural and urban landscapes that inform my work. The winding branches of the trees, jagged cracks in the concrete, new growth and slow decay inspire my mark making and the rhythmic process of building layers, then revealing what lies underneath. I liken the results to a city bulletin board, layered with colorful bits and pieces left behind by its visitors.
I use a mix of wood, canvas, collage, paint, markers and pastels, often breaking with tradition to achieve and enjoy the “imperfect” results. I also use a mix of traditional artists’ tools and non-traditional hardware store implements for layering, sanding, and scraping. My process of intuition and discovery, creation and destruction, are what bring together my old friends, chaos and order.” — Margie Caldwell Gill
