Order + Chaos
August 6 – September 14, 2016
Catharine Clark, Juror
ENTRY DEADLINE: Friday, May 13, 2016
Chaos is the unformed void. Order is its antithesis. Chaos has no meaning without order. The ebb and flow between order and chaos defines the eternal struggle. Chaos compels us to create order so that we may understand our world and survive within it. Like Loki in Norse mythology or any of the post-apocalyptic visions ever-present in pop culture, chaos is always lurking, threatening the collapse of order.
Artists face an inherent paradox when attempting to harness chaos since anything that restricts chaos brings order with it. Uncertainty is the companion to chaos continually undermining the artist’s emotional investment. When uncertainty drops away do we linger in that moment of clarity or do we go back for more? We either attempt to rid ourselves of chaos, or we revel in it, as Robert Smithson said, “building something not for the ages but rather against the ages.”
