Class Description: Spend a meditative afternoon learning the ancient art of Suminagashi. This technique comes from 9th-century Japan. Examples of Suminagashi are considered the oldest form of paper marbling. “Floating ink” is delicately placed on water and printed off the surface onto paper to create beautiful and unusual patterns of harmony. The process takes concentration and patience, as ring after ring of ink is placed onto the water. It is a hypnotic and calming process to do and results in papers of astounding natural beauty, each unique and mysterious.
Materials: All materials provided. You may wish to wear “art clothes” and bring an apron. A limited number of aprons are also available at the Arts Benicia Annex.
