Tattoo You

Tattoo You

Exhibition Dates: May 21 – June 26, 2022
Juror: Kevin B. Chen
Tattoos play an important role in shaping human culture by visually expressing a culture, defining and refining identities, and more importantly, providing a language to aid in self-expression. Tattoos have been a subject of taboo, badges of honor, a sign of defiance, a tribute, and even a reminder of a personal event. Is there a correlation between graffiti, cave markings, scarification, and the tattoo? “Tattoo You” seeks to find the “artistry” behind tattoos through drawings, paintings, and photographs that can highlight the unique collaboration between the tattoo artist and the client resulting in a meaningful statement of “I am/was here,” “I matter,” “I belong.”

About the Juror: Kevin B. Chen is a visual artist, curator, and educator currently serving as Resident Curator at the Fine Arts Gallery at San Francisco State University, faculty at San Francisco State University, visiting artist at Mills College, and a member of Recology’s Artist in Residence Program Advisory Board and Root Division’s Curatorial Committee. He recently served as co-chair for the City of Oakland’s Public Art Advisory Committee, managed the de Young Museum’s Artist Residency Program and Public Programs, and taught at Stanford University and California College of the Arts.

His own work in drawing, collage, and sculpture has been exhibited extensively locally and nationally. Kevin received his BA in Psychology and East Asian Languages & Cultures from Columbia University and is represented by Jack Fischer Gallery in San Francisco, CA.
