Introduction to Reduction Woodcut

Class Description: Join Toru Sugita for this one-day workshop to introduce Reduction Color Woodcut prints. Unlike Mokuhanga, Japanese woodblock prints, which utilize multiple blocks for color printing, Reduction print is a single-block technique, achieved by the gradual cutting away of one wood block following the printing of each color stage. All colors are printed just out of one block which is re-carved for each color. Thus the original block is destroyed during the creation process and further copies beyond the first edition are impossible. This technique emerged in China and has been practiced by printmakers around the world

Bring: Idea sketches of 6″ x 8″ with three tonal values and preferred wood curving knives (I will provide some)

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Toru Sugita, born and raised in Japan, has traveled extensively throughout Latin America and the Middle East, eventually becoming involved in the Bay Area community as an artist and an art educator. Toru received an MFA in printmaking from San Francisco State University. He illustrated the award-winning book, “Floating Lanterns and Golden Shrines.” His prints can be found in public collections including the Achenbach Foundation of Graphic Arts in the Fine Art Museum of San Francisco. In 2006 Toru moved to Grand Junction, Colorado, where he focused on teaching and multimedia collaborative works. In 2009 he returned to the Bay Area as a faculty member at Diablo Valley College, Pleasant Hill, where he is in charge of the printmaking programs.
