Class Description: In this class, students will have a chance to learn and practice more advanced paper marbling techniques. This class will be offered the day after a beginning class on Saturday, August 22. Students can take both classes. Students who sign up for this class will either need to take the class the day before, or have previous marbling experience. In this class, the instructor will demonstrate more advanced marbling techniques, then allow the students to try their hand at doing them. With experienced students, the instructor will be more available for “coaching” when the students are making marbled papers. All materials will be provided by the instructor: the marbling trays, the size, the paints, the tools, paper pre-treated with mordant, a draining board, a drying rack, etc. Every student will produce at least 6 sheets, probably more, of beautiful marbled paper.
Please bring a sack lunch to eat mid-day when we will take a short break.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Hampton Deck learned to marble from Pamela Smith, a world-renowned marbler, at her studio in Abiquiu, New Mexico, in July 2015. Pamela has marbled papers in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. I have also taken classes with Regina & Dan St John of Chena River Marblers, who are also world-renowned marblers, and who also have papers in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. I have also taken Ebru (the Turkish name for marbling) lessons in Istanbul, Turkey. I set up my own marbling studio in my garage in Benicia, CA, shortly after learning the art from Pamela Smith. Since 2015, I have marbled thousands of sheets of marbled paper in my studio and have taught many classes. In addition to marbling sheets of paper, I use my marbled paper to cover journals, datebooks, address books, etc., to make bookmarks and other paper creations. I also sell sheets of marbled paper. I primarily teach marbling and bookmaking classes at four locations: Arts Benicia (www.artsbenicia.org) which “provides exhibitions, educational programs, and classes that support artists and engage the broader community” in Benicia, CA, The O’Hanlon Center for the Arts (www.ohanloncenter.org) which “provides an environment and spaces where creativity and community can develop, expand and flourish” in Mill Valley, CA, My home marbling studio in Benicia, CA and I have also given a marbling workshop for The Hand Bookbinders of California.
