Solving the Puzzle: An Exploration of Collage Styles and Techniques

Level: Intermediate
Age minimum: 18

Minimum 4 | Maximum 8

Class description: Join Janet in this half-day exploration class, students will create 3 collage works. We will first review and discuss various styles of collage works; and compare the different methods of assembly and types of materials and images used. We will review and discuss the work of recognized collage artists. A short demonstration of materials and techniques will also be provided.
Students will then create 3 works using materials provided responding to 1) the current gallery exhibition at Arts Benicia, 2) a written prompt selected at random from prompts provided by the class leaders, and 3) using only materials provided in a “kit” provided.
Each exercise will follow this planning method:
 Explore – look carefully at the available materials
 Choose — size and format; color pallet; images, shapes, and glue method
 Focus – define the border for the image and begin to arrange the design using basic design principals
 Finalize – glue materials to the selected page

The class will conclude with a time to share finished images and for discussion and self-evaluation

Materials:

The instructor will provide:
Glue sticks and other glue materials
Mixed media paper as a substrate
Wood panel as a substrate
Markers for mark-making
Collage papers and images
Final exercise collage kit
View finder
Color copies of the work of sample collage artists

Student-provided materials:
Cell phone camera – you will use this to take pictures of inspirations and of your designs as they develop
Any images you want to use in the exploration. Bring copies so that you don’t ruin or use an original
Mark-making tools such as felt markers; crayons; conte crayons; pencils; ink marking tools
Old magazines or catalogs to be used as a gluing surface
Scissors and matt knife for cutting
Ruler or other straight-edge tools
Handmade or printed papers you want to use

 

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

 

Janet Glore Valls worked as a legal services professional. Now retired, she worked in law firm management, human resources, and process and workflow improvement and design. She has developed and delivered many adult training courses including, customer-service training, team development, employee mentoring, and coaching programs for newer workers and managers. She has delivered art demonstrations and project classes for several local arts organizations. She is a dedicated supporter of the arts and is an active collage, mixed media, and assemblage artist.
