Class Description: In this class, students will learn how to make marbled paper. The instructor will demonstrate a variety of methods of how to throw paint on the size, how to manipulate the paint with nails, rakes, and combs, how to lay down the paper on the size, and how to wash & dry the marbled paper. Each student will have their own marbling tray, set of acrylic paints, and their own nails, rakes, and combs. The instructor will alternate between demonstrating and helping students as they do it themselves. Each student can work at their own pace. Every student will make a minimum of 6 sheets of beautiful marbled paper, but can make many more. All materials —marbling trays, sizes, paints, tools, paper pre-treated with mordant, a draining board, a drying rack, etc. —will be provided.
Notes:
The instructor will offer a lecture on paper marbling using PowerPoint slides sometime during the day. Students can either listen and watch the lecture or continue marbling. The instructor will also bring his large collection of books on marbled paper and samples of his own marbled papers for students to see. Please bring a sack lunch to eat when we take a short break halfway through the day.
If students have previous experience, this class will allow them to practice their skills. On the following afternoon, Sunday, January 25, a more advanced class with more limited enrollment will be offered, in which the instructor will offer further instruction and demonstrate more advanced techniques. Students who register for this class can also register for the more advanced class.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Hampton Deck learnt to marble from Pamela Smith, a world-renowned marbler, at her studio in Abiqui, New Mexico, in July 2015. Pamela has marbled papers in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Hampton has also taken classes with Regina & Dan St John of Chena River Marblers, who are also world-renowned, and who also have papers in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Hampton has also taken Ebru (the Turkish name for marbling) lessons in Istanbul, Turkey.
Hampton set up his own marbling studio in my garage in Benicia, CA, shortly after learning the art from Pamela Smith. Since 2015, Hampton has marbled literally thousands of sheets of marbled paper in my studio and has taught many classes. In addition to marbling sheets of paper, Hampton uses his marbled paper to cover journals, datebooks, address books, etc., to make bookmarks and other paper creations. I also sell sheets of marbled paper.
