Keely Reyes at City Council Chambers

Keely Reyes at City Council Chambers

August 15 to November 14, 2022
Kara Nelson, Curator

Keely Reyes is a California-based graphic designer and illustrator with an emerging fine art practice. She got her start in the sciences and then pivoted to art and design. She is curious by nature and influenced by the things she observes and sees in the world. When she isn’t working she can be found curled up with a book, tending to her succulent garden, or exploring the Bay-Area with her husband and two children. Her design and illustration work has been featured in Uppercase Magazine, For Print Only, Work/Life Vol. 3, and the Print Regional Design Annual 2015, and 2016.

Artist Statement
I enjoy creating female faces and forms that combine what may sometimes appear as opposing elements: voluminous, eccentrically shaped hair and clothing with small faces, hands, and feet, competing pattern elements, or unexpected colors. Using acrylic on wood, I explore ways to fill the space, whether it is with the subject or with abstract floral patterns. My characters are reserved, peaceful, and mysterious. They are being looked upon and yet they hold something back. As an introverted person with an active inner world, I am accustomed to having a busy, kinetic center that can be difficult to translate externally. My characters, too, are holding something within.

Keely currently lives and works in Benicia, California.
Education: Academy of Art University, San Francisco, B.A. Graphic Design + Illustration, 2010
