Class Description: There are many important aspects of art to learn, but there are two foundational skills we will focus on in this class. Strengthening foundational skills enables students to explore their creativity more deeply. We will be focusing on the elements of value (light and dark). Value is used to create a more realistic drawing. We will work on skills in shading: hatching, crosshatching, stippling, scumbling, and blending. Another first step of simple drawings is mastering the art of drawing shapes and forms. The cube, the cylinder, and the sphere are the fundamental shapes an artist must learn to achieve a deeper understanding of all forms when learning to draw. Practice in these two foundations will be strengthened through drawings including contour line drawing, negative space drawing, small still-life studies, perspective drawing, and figure drawing.
